Installing Netsweeper on Windows Devices

This article provides instructions for installing the Windows client on a student device.

You must have local administrator rights to complete the installation steps below.

Run the Netsweeper Installer
  1. Double-click the installer file to begin the installation.
  2. Check the box next to I accept the terms in the License Agreement.
  3. Click the Install button.
  4. In the User Account Control window, click Yes
    Note: You may need to enter admin credentials.
  5. The installation begins, displaying a progress bar. A success message appears upon completion.
  6. Click Finish to close the setup wizard.

Confirm the Group with the Filtering Policy
  1. In the Netsweeper WebAdmin dashboard, select Policies from the left navigation menu.
  2. Under Policies, select Groups.
  3. Identify the Group that contains the relevant filtering policy (e.gstudents@lenovoacademy.edu).
  4. Note the Group name, as you’ll need it in the next section.

Configure the Netsweeper Client
  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Open the Control Panel.
  3. Select System and Security
    Note: skip this step if you are in icon view.
  4. Click Netsweeper Client Filter (32-bit).
  5. In the Netsweeper Client Filter window, select Filter Settings.
  6. In the User Account Control window, click Yes
    Note: you may need to enter admin credentials.
  7. On the Settings tab, find the Domain/User/Group Settings section.
  8. In the Group Override field, enter the group name you confirmed earlier (e.g., students@lenovoacademy.edu).
  9. Scroll down and click the Save button.
    Note: if a warning appears indicating the configuration failed to save, click Save again.
  10. Close the Filter Settings window.
  11. Close the Netsweeper Client Filter window.

Test the Configuration
  1. On the student device, open a web browser (e.g., Microsoft Edge).
  2. Search for a word or phrase that you expect to be denied.
    For example, if the Group filtering policy is set to Strict, searching for the word alcohol should display the Netsweeper Deny page.

Uninstall the Netsweeper Client Filter
  1. Open the Start menu and select Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Search for Netsweeper in the list of installed apps.
  4. Select Netsweeper Client Filter and click the Uninstall button.
  5. You will be prompted for Administrator permission to complete the uninstall.
After the Netsweeper client is uninstalled, the device will no longer be filtered. However, the history of that device will still be available for reporting purposes.
