Installing Lenovo NetFilter for Windows devices

Overview

This article explains how to install the Windows client on an individual student device.

You must have local administrator rights to install software on the student devices in order to perform the steps below. 

Run the Lenovo NetFilter Installer

  1. Double-click the file to start the installation.
  2. Select the checkbox next to "I accept the terms in the License Agreement".
  3. Select the Install button.
  4. In the User Account Control window, select the Yes button.  NOTE:  You may be prompted to enter admin credentials.
  5. The installation begins, and the progress bar displays, followed by a success message when it completes.
  6. Select the Finish button to close the setup wizard.

Confirm the Group that contains the Filtering Policy

  1. In the Lenovo NetFilter WebAdmin dashboard, select Policies in the navigation menu on the left.
  2. Under Policies, select Groups.
  3. Confirm the Group name that contains the appropriate filtering policy. (e.g. students@lenovoacademy.edu)
  4. Make a note of the Group name as you will need it in the next section.

Configure the Lenovo NetFilter Client

  1. Select the Start button.
  2. Search for and open Control Panel.
  3. Select System and Security.
    1. NOTE:  Skip this step if you are in icon view.
  4. Select Lenovo NetFilter (32-bit) or Lenovo NetFilter Plus (32-bit).
  5. In the Lenovo NetFilter (Plus) window, select Filter Settings.
  6. In the User Account Control window, select the Yes button.  NOTE:  You may be prompted to enter admin credentials.
  7. On the Settings tab, locate the Domain/User/Group Settings section.
  8. In the Group Override field, enter the Group name that you verified in the previous section. (e.g. students@lenovoacademy.edu)
  9. Scroll down and select the Save button.
    1. NOTE:  If you see a warning message stating that the configuration failed to save, select the Save button again.
  10. Close the Filter Settings window.
  11. Close the Lenovo NetFilter (Plus) window.

Test the Configuration

  1. On the student device, open a web browser (e.g. Microsoft Edge).
  2. Search for a word or phrase that you would expect would be denied.
    1. For example, if you have the Group filtering policy set to Strict, searching for the word alcohol should result in the Lenovo NetFilter Deny Page being shown.

Uninstalling Lenovo Filter

  1. Select the "Start" menu and open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Search for NetFilter in the list.
  4. Select Lenovo NetFilter and press the Uninstall button.
  5. You will be prompted for Administrator permission to perform the uninstall.
After the Lenovo NetFilter client is uninstalled, the device will no longer be filtered. However, the history of that device will still be available for reporting purposes.
