Installing Lenovo NetFilter for macOS Devices

Overview

This article explains how to install the macOS client on an individual student device (MacBook, iMac, etc.).

You must have local administrator rights to install software on the student devices in order to perform the steps below. 

Run the Lenovo NetFilter Installer

  1. Double-click the Package file (.pkg) to start the installation.
  2. On the Welcome page, select the Continue button.
  3. On the Software License Agreement page, select Continue.
  4. Select the Agree button to accept the license agreement.
  5. Select the Install button.  NOTE:  You may be prompted to enter admin credentials.
  6. In the Add Proxy Configurations alert window, select Allow.
  7. Once the installation is complete, select the Close button.

Approve the NetFilter Proxy Certificate

  1. Open a new Finder window and navigate to Applications > Utilities.
  2. Open the Keychain Access utility.
  3. In the left navigation pane, select System.
  4. At the top of the window, select Certificates.
  5. Locate and open the proxy.www.lenovo.com certificate.
  6. Select the right arrow (>) next to Trust.
  7. To the right of "When using this certificate", select Always Trust.
  8. Close the certificate window and select Update Settings.  NOTE:  You may be prompted to enter admin credentials.
  9. Close the Keychain Access utility.  NOTE:  You may be prompted to enter admin credentials.

Confirm the Group that contains the Filtering Policy

  1. In the Lenovo NetFilter WebAdmin dashboard, select Policies in the navigation menu on the left.
  2. Under Policies, select Groups.
  3. Confirm the Group name that contains the appropriate filtering policy. (e.g. students@lenovoacademy.edu)
  4. Make a note of the Group name as you will need it in the next section.

Configure the Lenovo NetFilter Client

  1. Select the Apple menu and then select System Settings (or System Preferences).
  2. Select the Lenovo NetFilter icon.
  3. Select Filter Settings.
  4. In the Lenovo NetFilter window, select Filter Settings.
  5. On the Settings page, locate the Domain/User/Group Settings section.
  6. In the Group Override field, enter the Group name that you verified in the previous section. (e.g. students@lenovoacademy.edu)
  7. Scroll down and select the Save button.
    1. NOTE:  If you see warning message stating that the configuration failed to save, select the Save button again.
  8. Close the Filter Settings window.
  9. Close the Lenovo NetFilter window.
  10. Close the System Preferences window.

Test the Configuration

  1. On the student device, open a web browser (e.g. Safari).
  2. Search for a word or phrase that you would expect would be denied.
    1. For example, if you have the Group filtering policy set to Strict, searching for the word alcohol should result in the Lenovo NetFilter Deny Page being shown.
  3. If the Deny Page is not shown and a search results page is displayed instead, please contact Support.

Uninstalling Lenovo Filter

  1. Select the Apple menu and then select System Preferences.
  2. Select the Lenovo NetFilter icon.
  3. Select the Filter Settings button.
  4. Select the Uninstall button.
  5. Select the OK button.
After the Lenovo NetFilter client is uninstalled, the device will no longer be filtered. However, the history of that device will still be available for reporting purposes.  For more information about Reports, click here.
